About the European Union Film Festival in Singapore

The European Union Film Festival is an annual event that showcases a collection of films which draws on the diverse and rich culture of Europe. The film festival, now in its twentieth year is a window into the intriguing world of European cinema. The films showcased in this festival may belong to a specific country, but they are all representative of Europe’s common cultural heritage. The richness of Europe’s culture is world renowned. Language, literature, performing arts, visual arts, architecture, crafts, broadcastingand of course, cinema all celebrates Europe’s cultural diversity and history.

The EU is also active in promoting filmmaking all over the world through its MEDIA Mundus programme. This programme is the EU’s support programme for the European audiovisual industry and over the past 16 years it has supported the development and distribution of thousands of films as well as training activities, festivals and promotion projects throughout the continent. From 2001-2006, more than half a billion euros were injected into 8.000 projects from over 30 countries.

With this funding and cooperation available to Singaporean film professionals and the film industry, we hope to see an increase in the cinematic exchange and the fostering of closer cultural exchange between Europe and Singapore. The Delegation works to enhance the visibility of the European Union (EU) and promotes closer ties with Singapore by providing an efficient and reliable communication channel between the EU and the Singapore government. The Delegation also encourages people to people interactions and highlights Europe’s cultural and linguistic diversity, promotes European higher education and facilitates cooperation in the field of science and technology through its various activities.

The Head of Delegation to Singapore is Ambassador Holger Standertskjöld.

About the Singapore Film Society

For more than 5 decades, the Singapore Film Society has been conceptualizing, sourcing, programming, marketing and managing a year-round line-up of quality film screenings that now averages over 200 movies every year. Since 1996, we have been based at GV Marina. When we moved into this new permanent home, we became the first film society in the world to be based in a state-of-the-art, city-centre multiplex. Our team of enthusiastic and highly experienced volunteers can conceptualize, create, and maximize the impact of any cinema-related event, big or small. We have one of the most well established membership bases in the region.
